BioSyL is a research federation that was created in 2011 under the auspices of the University of Lyon.
In 2021, it joined its forces with the Complex Systems Institute (IXXI).
Initially focused on Lyon and Saint-Etienne, it opened in 2022 to Grenoble groups.
It gathers about 50 local research teams working on systems biology in its most varied aspects. Its objectives are to federate these teams, to make them visible and to promote research in systems biology, as well as local skills in this field.

Participants
Any research teams from the relevant disciplines (mathematics, physics, computer science, biology, chemistry, human and social sciences, medicine) using a "Systems Biology" approach in the Rhône Alpes region.
Objectives
- To provide a forum where Biology and Health projects in Rhône Alpes can participate fully in the challenges of the 21st century.
- To offer access to this essential approach to all the Biology specialists in Rhône Alpes (health professionals, industrial and academic scientists).
- To highlight, on a national and an international level, the Systems Biology activities taking place in Rhône Alpes
- To position the Rhône Alpes region as a key player in Systems Biology at the world scale.
Missions
- To improve access to Systems Biology for all the biologists working in Rhône Alpes via a portal dedicated to education and research. This website provides such an access, through its Research section and its Education section.
- To represent the scientific community of Rhône Alpes at any discussions involving local, national and international decision-makers. To encourage effective networking for research in Systems Biology (mailing lists, websites, collaborations, seminar management etc.).
- To organize events promoting Systems Biology, linking the Rhône Alpes network with international specialists. The SBIP2013 conference was the first of the series. The international ICSB conference was held in Lyon in 2018.
- To organise access to computing resources, notably to future storage and data-processing platforms (in cooperation with the FMSN and the PRABI).
- To identify future needs in the domain of Systems Biology and to contribute to the solutions.
- To identify concerns from those industries requiring a Systems Biology approach and to propose solutions and local contacts to our partners.
